October is special at RDS because it’s National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM).
RDS has recruited and worked with people with disabilities for more than 20 years. Last year, Brooklyn Community Services (BCS) nominated RDS for the 2016 ACCESS-VR National Disability Employment Awareness Month Local Business Award from the NYC Mayor’s Office for People with Disabilities. We were proud to win this award but, most importantly, we were proud to help make a difference in our community. Our messenger company in NYC has hired, mentored and trained more than 25 BCS clients with disabilities to become outdoor street messengers. Their contributions have played a key role in shaping our company’s success. And their efforts will play an important part in our future.
The NDEAM theme for 2017 is “Inclusion Drives Innovation.” This theme is especially fitting for our delivery company as our employees navigate the NYC streets to benefit customers. It was a true honor to be acknowledged by BCS. RDS will continue to create an environment where people with disabilities can excel through rewarding careers.

The Big Chocolate Show—Oct. 6-8
For one weekend, chocolate takes over NYC at the Big Chocolate Show. Chocolatiers, chefs and other experts come together to create the sweetest exhibition of the year. Attendees can watch live demonstrations, participate in tasting classes and much more. If you own a retail business that dips into the chocolate world, you won’t want to miss this event.
Cider Week—Oct. 20-29
Homemade cider is a staple in New York State. During NYC Cider Week, cider makers from NY and beyond connect with potential buyers in NYC. It’s a chance for representatives from restaurants, bars and retail shops to learn more about the craft and help support local orchards. All week long, you’ll see craft cider on restaurant menus across NYC. Check out event locations for your taste of the cider-making industry.
Haunted Lantern Tours at Fort Totten Park—Oct. 27-28
If ghost stories in a pitch-black space are right up your alley, then you’ll love the Haunted Lantern Tour at Fort Totten Park. Urban park rangers will guide you through the eerie Water Battery Gate as they share stories about what allegedly happened there. Enter at your own risk at Shore and Abbott roads.
Big Apple Circus—Oct. 28-29
Celebrating its 40th anniversary, the Big Apple Circus is back and better than ever. Unlike the typical American three-ring circus, this incredible display of stunts and thrills brings spectators closer to the action in a European, one-ring circus. This year, Nik Wallenda, known as the “Greatest Daredevil of Our Generation” joins other legendary performers to put on a show like you’ve never seen before.
